Caring for the land the right way.
Hale Honua is a Native Hawaiian–owned landscaping and restoration company on the Kona side of Hawaiʻi Island, started by two brothers and carried by a team that shares one way of caring for the land.
Owner Ikua Hauanio grew up in Kalapana, working on the land. Our father served with the National Park Service, and he taught Ikua the many ways each native plant needs to be cared for, and how to mālama pono. Ikua carries that knowledge forward today as third-generation National Park Service and a member of its resource management team. He cares for every plant he touches as if it were his own.
Ikua’s partner Sequoia carries the same practice. Sequoia is second-generation National Park Service and also serves on the resource management team, now on the Kona coast at Kaloko. The two met working in the park. Sequoia brings hands-on experience in weed and invasive-plant control, including past work as a licensed herbicide applicator in Washington State, and knows that the gentlest method that works is usually the right one.
Ikua’s brother Hanalei Hauanio runs the business side: estimates, scheduling and paperwork. When you reach out, Hanalei is the person you’ll hear from, so Ikua and Sequoia can stay focused on the land.
Together we cover the whole job: the knowledge to keep native and island plants healthy across Kona’s climates, from the dry coast to the cool uplands, and the follow-through to show up on schedule, work through problems as they come, and leave your yard looking its best.
